Saturnia expands with new SAMA isostatic press

The company based in Corchiano (Viterbo) installs a third PHO451 “GREEN” press complete with finishing system. Superior quality and process repeatability are combined with reduction in energy consumption of more than 30%. The investment renews the technological partnership with SACMI and is supported by the REpowerEU program.

Saturnia, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of porcelain both for the catering industry and domestic use, has recently installed and commissioned a third PHO451 “GREEN” isostatic press at its facility in Corchiano (VT).  With this latest investment, Saturnia has reaffirmed its confidence in SAMA-SACMI isostatic pressing technology, thanks to its superior quality, repeatability and process versatility along with a substantial reduction in energy consumption.

The new PHO451 GREEN, like the previous ones, was supplied complete with an OFM 8-38 universal finishing machine. The press is designed for isostatic pressing of tableware articles of various shapes and sizes, including plates with up to 38 cm diameter, for round and oval pieces, and up to 40 cm in diagonal for square and rectangular pieces. Integration with the finishing system makes it possible to handle non-round articles with maximum efficiency through automatic perimeter detection of the piece. This setup, combined with quick size changeover, is ideal for managing small lots and diversified production mixes, in line with market demand.

Environmental and economic sustainability objectives are key to this project. The use of PHO GREEN technology leads to a reduction in energy consumption by more than 30% compared to traditional presses. Furthermore, there is a significant decrease in cooling water usage thanks to reduced overheating of the hydraulic oil during the pressing stage. The installation of the new PHO 451 – replacing an old hydraulic press – will enable Saturnia to benefit from the REPowerEU plan, in addition to the other advantages in terms of net efficiency and optimization of the use of resources.

The project strengthens Saturnia’s growth strategy on the European tableware market, focusing on automation, quality and sustainability. The third PHO 451 “GREEN” press joins the twin solutions supplied in 2016 and 2021, alongside the other SAMA presses already installed in the past, confirming the long-term reliability of this technology.

With the new PHO451 Green up and running at full capacity, the overall production output of the factory can reach more than 15 million pieces per year, through a production process that can now be carried out even more efficiently both from an operational point of view and in terms of energy savings.
